About the course

Cooktown Golf Club lies on the coastal dunes at Walker Bay, between Monkhouse Point and the Annan River, with Mount Cook as its backdrop. The club describes it as the most northerly golf course on Australia's east coast. The holes were built locally and follow the natural shape of the dunes with very little earthmoving, giving a sand-based, links-style course threaded through tropical bushland.

There are nine holes with dual tees, played twice for an 18-hole round of par 65 over 4,297 metres, or par 68 for women. Flat lies are rare, some tee shots and approaches are blind, and south-easterly trade winds of around 20 knots blow most days. The greens are grass, and billabong-fed irrigation tops up the wet season, when low-lying parts of the course usually fill with water from February to April.

  • 4th/13th: a hard dogleg right of 312 and 337 metres, where a carry of more than 200 metres over the corner opens up a birdie chance.
  • 6th/15th: a blind par 3 of 206 and 175 metres to a narrow, two-tiered green.

Visitors are welcome every day and green-fee players can use the course all day, though it can close for events or maintenance, so ring (07) 4069 5800 first. Saturday is the main competition day with a 10am tee-off, Friday is tradies day and Sunday is a social day. The Cooktown Open, a 36-hole event with a $10,000 hole-in-one prize, is held in late June (27 and 28 June in 2026). Electric carts, pull buggies and clubs can be hired, with weekday cart hire by prior booking only. Neat golf attire is expected. The clubhouse opens from 7.30am to 5.30pm and has a licensed bar serving cold drinks and snacks.
