About the course
Hamilton Island Golf Club occupies Dent Island, across Dent Passage from Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays, and is reached by ferry from the Hamilton Island Marina. The course was designed by Peter Thomson, the Australian five-time winner of the British Open, and the clubhouse, which looks over Dent Passage, by the architect Chris Beckingham. The Ngaro and Gia People are the traditional custodians of the land and sea.
The par 71 layout follows the ridges and steep valleys of the island, with two nines that both return to the central clubhouse: the front nine is more compact, while the back nine stretches along the southern ridges. It measures 6,140 metres from the championship tees, 5,678 from the middle and 4,985 from the forward tees, with TifEagle greens and Greenlees Park couch fairways. Breezes are constant and the prevailing wind is from the south.
- 4th: a 175-metre par 3 played across a valley and exposed to the wind.
- 14th: the signature hole, a 150-metre par 3 nicknamed the "Valley of Death".
- 16th: a 160-metre par 3 to a plateau green set between two rock formations.
- 18th: the longest par 4 at 421 metres, with a tee shot that drops about 40 metres.
Play is by pre-booked tee time, online or through the pro shop. Green fees are $265 for 18 holes and $180 for nine, including the return ferry and a shared GPS cart. Ferries leave the marina on the hour, tee times run from 7.20am to 12.30pm for 18 holes (2.30pm for nine), and 18 holes with transfers takes about five hours. Club hire is $75 and shoe hire $20. Dress is smart casual with enclosed shoes; collared shirts are required for men.
The clubhouse serves a golfers' snack menu from 11am to 3.30pm daily and a pre-booked two-course lunch.
