About the course

Pioneer Valley Golf Club is on Leichhardt Road at Mirani, in the Pioneer Valley about 38 kilometres west of Mackay. Volunteers with tractors cleared 21 hectares of cattle and forest country for the first nine holes, which opened on 25 March 1984. The professional at Mackay Golf Club at the time sketched that layout, now the back nine, on a beer coaster at the Mirani Hotel.

Brisbane designer David Burrup laid out a second nine around a 65-megalitre irrigation dam, opened in 1998. The club later bought neighbouring land for the two holes now numbered 1 and 9, which bring the round back past the clubhouse at the turn, and a 2005 federal grant paid for a pipeline carrying treated water from the Mirani treatment works to the dam for fairway irrigation.

Social players are welcome: fill in a details form at the clubhouse or ask for one by email, then pay by EFTPOS or leave an authority form in the honesty box. No visitor green fee is published. Bookings are essential, and visitors with a Golf Australia handicap who belong to another club can enter competitions:

  • Tuesday: women's competition from 9am, plus a men's competition.
  • Thursday: veterans from 8:30am.
  • Saturday: main club competition from 6:30am.
  • Sunday: junior sessions in the morning.

Motorised carts are allowed on the course. The clubhouse, which has a bar, opens at 7am (6:30am on Saturday) and closes at 3pm Monday to Thursday and 5pm Friday to Sunday.
