About the course
The Grand Golf Club is a private, members-owned club at Gilston, at the foot of the Gold Coast hinterland about 18 kilometres from the beaches. Greg Norman designed the course as a project for Japanese owners, and it opened in 1990 only to close a day later for lack of funds, then sat idle for around five years. A consortium of Australian businessmen bought the site in February 1996, Norman restored the course over about 18 months, and the club launched on 3 December 1997 with Norman holding membership number one. The Grand hosted the 2001 Australian Open, won by Stuart Appleby, and a major revamp began in 2017 for the club's 20th anniversary.
The club describes it as a 19-hole course. By the club's hole-by-hole figures, the main 18 holes play to par 72 and 6,084 metres from the championship tees, and an extra short par 3 of about 140 metres sits alongside them. Creeks, a river and several lakes come into play. Holes of note include:
- 6th: a 159-metre par 3 across the river to a raised green with no bunkers.
- 12th: a 472-metre par 5 with a lake across the front of the green.
- 16th: a 178-metre uphill par 3 guarded by bunkers at the front.
- 18th: a 367-metre par 4 driven across a creek, bending slightly left and uphill to a shallow green in front of the clubhouse.
The Grand is not open to the public. Play is limited to members and their guests: a member may bring up to three guests at a time, guests are limited to five rounds a year and must play with a member, and there are no corporate days or reciprocal rights. Membership is capped at 555 shares, and members play without tee times or green fees. Guests enter through a security gate.
Members have a valet club service, a driving range with unlimited balls, and practice greens and bunkers. The clubhouse has locker rooms, a library, a terrace, a bar and a restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days.
