About the course
Nullarbor Links is an 18-hole, par 72 course spread along 1,365 kilometres of the Eyre Highway between Ceduna in South Australia and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, with a hole at each participating town or roadhouse. The idea came in 2004 from Robert Bongiorno, then chairman of the Eyre Highway Operators Association, which still runs the course. A feasibility study followed in 2006 and the course was completed in 2009, with holes at the existing golf clubs in Ceduna, Eucla, Norseman, Kambalda and Kalgoorlie and at roadhouses along the highway.
Each hole has a turfed tee and green with a natural outback fairway, except at Ceduna, where the greens are sand. The course suggests bringing old irons for the fairways and teeing up on an upturned water bottle cap. The first six holes are at the South Australian end: - 1st, Oyster Beds: a 485-metre par 5 at Ceduna Golf Club. - 2nd, Denial Bay: a 370-metre par 4, also at Ceduna Golf Club. - 3rd, Windmills: at Penong Golf Course. - 4th, Wombat Hole: a 520-metre par 5 at Nundroo. - 5th, Dingo's Den: a 538-metre par 5 at the Nullarbor Motel. - 6th, Border Kangaroo: a 126-metre par 3 at Border Village.
A scorecard costs $78, or $178 for a family pass covering one or two adults and their children under 16, from the Ceduna, Norseman or Kalgoorlie visitor centres; maps come with the card. Each hole is stamped at a nearby roadhouse or visitor centre. Most holes are open around the clock with no booking, but the last two holes at Kalgoorlie must be booked with the Kalgoorlie pro shop the day before. Clubs hire for $50 from the Ceduna or Kalgoorlie visitor centres and go back where you finish, and the visitor centre at Ceduna or Kalgoorlie then verifies the card and prints a completion certificate. The Guidify app covers every hole. Watch for snakes and leave holes in the ground alone.
