About the course
The Gums GC Salisbury is on Woomera Avenue at Edinburgh, in Salisbury, about 30 minutes' drive north of Adelaide's city centre. The club still trades formally as Penfield Golf Club, and its roots lie in the Penfield Ammunition Factory built for the Second World War. It was founded in September 1959 as the Weapons Research Establishment Institute club, using a derelict single men's quarters as its first clubhouse. Volunteers began turning a flat, treeless clay plain into a course, which opened on 9 April 1960 with 115 members. In 2006 the government earmarked the land for housing, but a planned move further north fell through during the global financial crisis and the club stayed put, marking the course's 50th anniversary in 2010.
The layout is nine holes with alternate tees for 18, measuring 5,793 metres at par 72 from the championship tees and 5,287 metres for women. Fairways are tree-lined kikuyu, the greens are bent grass, and the course is played all year round.
Visitors pay $38 for 18 holes and $28 for nine, with higher rates on weekends and public holidays, and twilight rates start at 3pm in winter and 4.30pm in summer. Visitor times are a guide only: all day Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, after 10.30am Tuesday, after 1.30pm Wednesday and after 2.30pm Saturday. Bookings are essential on Sundays, so ring (08) 8281 5210 ahead. Visitor carts cost $40 for 18 holes and $25 for nine, push carts $5 and hire clubs $15.
The 220-metre driving range is open to visitors at all times, with 40 balls for $10. Alongside are a double practice putting green, two chipping and pitching areas and bunker practice. There is an on-course pro shop with club repairs, PGA professional Brian Galvin, and a licensed clubhouse with kitchen and barbecue facilities available for hire. Competitions run on most days.
