About the course
Horsham Golf Club was established in 1898 in a paddock near Gardenia Street, moved to Horsham East in 1924, and in 1946 bought 64 hectares of sandy country at Haven, about five minutes from Horsham. Course architect Sam Berriman drew up the design, members spent three years carving it out of the scrub, and after Kevin Hartley and green-keeper Max Ward refined the plan, members first played it in 1949. The 2009 bushfires destroyed the clubhouse, pro shop and about 15,000 trees and shrubs; the club has since rebuilt and adopted a master plan by Crafter and Mogford.
The 18-hole course measures 5907 metres to par 71 from the men's tees and 5181 metres to par 72 for women, among old whispering gums with the Grampians in the distance.
- 2nd: at 192 metres, the longest par 3.
- 6th: the longest hole, a 520-metre par 5 that plays almost as a double dogleg.
- 8th: a 153-metre par 3 from a raised tee over a sandy waste known as the Sahara.
- 17th: a 404-metre par 4 that sweeps left, rated the hardest hole.
- 18th: a 281-metre par 4 that long hitters can sometimes drive.
The public is welcome. Green fees are $60 for 18 holes and $40 for nine; juniors under 18 pay $20 and $15, and under-12s play free. Carts are $60 for 18 holes, and tee times can be booked online. Green fee players can go out after 10.30am on Mondays and Fridays, on Wednesdays subject to availability, after 2.30pm on Saturdays and all day Sunday. There is no formal dress code beyond neat casual wear.
Practice facilities include a sheltered, lit driving range with a 20-metre hitting pad, a 24-hour ball machine, and a chipping and putting green. The pro shop opens daily for hire, lessons, fitting and repairs, and the clubhouse has a cafe and bar.
