About the course
Atherton Golf Club is on the western edge of Atherton, at the foot of national park hills about 700 metres above sea level on the Atherton Tablelands. The club puts the drive from Cairns or Innisfail at about 75 minutes. The course was officially opened in September 1925 on Jessop Road as a nine-hole layout. Over the years some holes were closed and new ones built on the western side of the road, and with funding from several agencies the course reached 13 holes in 1991 and a full 18 in 2001, after storage dams were built and irrigation using recycled council water was installed. The current clubhouse and car park were finished in 1969.
The 18 holes play to par 70 over 5,588 metres for men and par 72 over 4,983 metres for women. It is a parkland course of large and small raised greens, fairways lined by tall gums, lakes and bunkers, with several near right-angle doglegs that call for irons from the tee. It is not long and is easy to walk. The club says the altitude adds a little carry and keeps the course cooler than the coast, and suggests April to September as the best months to visit. Curlews are among the birdlife on the course.
Visitors are welcome. Green fees are $30 for 18 holes and $20 for nine, with 18 holes for $20 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Clubs, push buggies and motorised carts can be hired. The weekly program:
- Wednesday: 18-hole medley competition and nine-hole sporters.
- Thursday: women's 18-hole competition.
- Saturday: 18-hole competitions for men and women.
- Sunday: 18-hole medley, plus an early-morning juniors competition.
Practice facilities include nets, a short-game area and putting and chipping greens. The clubhouse has a licensed bar open seven days, a golf shop for balls, gloves and shirts, and light snacks. A goose club with meat tray prizes runs on Saturday evenings from about 5.30pm, and the clubhouse can be hired for functions.
