About the course
Murgon Golf Club is at 194 Lamb Street in Murgon, the South Burnett town on the Bunya Highway about 92 km west of Gympie and 245 km north-west of Brisbane. Golf began here in 1931 on nine holes laid out on part of Mrs M. Angel's farm, which doubled as an aerodrome, so stray stock and aircraft were hazards. The club then leased its present site from the council and the Lands Department, and the course opened on 3 June 1933 with a three-day carnival for 94 players. The old shire office, bought for £60 in 1934, was re-erected as the clubhouse, which opened in March 1935 and was largely rebuilt in 1970.
The first grass green arrived in 1954, mounds and bunkers were added around selected greens in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and fairway irrigation followed in 1976. The course is now fully reticulated with couch fairways and plays as 18 holes over nine greens, with separate tees giving a different look on the second loop. Men play to par 70: 5,587 metres from the blue tees or 5,157 metres from the white. Women play the yellow tees (5,160 metres, par 72) or the red (4,891 metres, par 71). The longest hole is the 460-metre 2nd from the blue tees.
Visitors pay $30 for 18 holes and $20 for nine (juniors $10), and motorised carts cost $30 for 18 holes and $20 for nine. Visitors can join competitions: - Wednesday: men's at 9am; women's at 8am in summer, 9am in winter. - Thursday: Sporters nine-hole social at 2pm, $12 for visitors. - Saturday: women's competition. - Sunday: men's competition, teeing off around noon.
The clubhouse bar opens Thursday 2pm to 7pm, Friday 5pm to 10pm and Sunday 10:30am to 8pm, with meals on Friday nights from 6pm to 8pm. Fully self-contained campers can stay on the practice fairway, entered from Heading Street, and dogs are allowed.
