About the course
Albany Golf Club lies among the coastal dunes at Middleton Beach, looking out over King George Sound. The idea of a links between Middleton Beach and Lake Seppings was raised in 1898, the club was formally established in September 1899, and its first nine holes, laid out by surveyor William Angove, opened on 3 February 1900. It is the oldest club in Western Australia still on its original site. Wars and the Depression delayed the second nine until member Bill Anderson's 18-hole layout opened in May 1963. The course is on the State Register of Heritage Places, and the current clubhouse at the northern end opened in 2000, when the holes were renumbered.
The par 72 links plays over rolling ground with exposed, sloping greens, steep drop-offs and few true doglegs, and the coastal wind changes club selection from day to day.
- 2nd (Memorial Drive): a 398-metre par 4, the index 1 hole, played blind from an elevated tee.
- 10th (The Keyhole): a 163-metre par 3 through a narrow corridor of trees to an exposed green.
- 13th (Ginger's Rest): the longest par 4 at 400 metres, to a plateau green.
- 18th (Gun Barrel): a 390-metre par 4 lined by dense rough, with dead ground in front of the green.
Visitors can play outside competition times: all day Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, Wednesday mornings, Thursday afternoons and Saturdays after 3pm. Green fees are $70 for 18 holes and $45 for nine. Book online or through the pro shop on (08) 9844 8433. Electric carts cost $45 for 18 holes and $30 for nine and must be booked, and pull buggies are $5. Dress must be neat and tidy.
The pro shop is open from 7.30am to 5.30pm daily, with lessons from PGA professional Michael Draper and a Trackman studio. The upstairs restaurant takes Friday lunch and dinner bookings.
