About the course
Gerringong Golf Club sits between the seaside towns of Gerringong and Gerroa, next to Walkers Beach and surrounded by farmland. It is a young club built largely by volunteers. Kiama Council called a public meeting in June 1981 to test interest in a course on the 'Beachlands' property, and members mapped out nine holes that were first played in December 1981. Council halted play in 1982, then allowed it to resume that December after an environmental study, and in 1985 the club bought the land for $150,000. Al Howard walked the site and set out how the course should run without drawing a plan. Retired merchant navy engineer Ted Wright shaped greens and fairways on a borrowed D7 bulldozer, the back nine opened in December 1989 and the full 18 holes opened on 29 May 1993.
The course climbs through rolling hills, with views from every tee and green, and four dams were built during construction. It is a hilly walk, and the club keeps a fleet of carts for nine or 18 holes. Hole-by-hole videos are on the club website.
The course is open seven days to social golfers. Book online in groups of four or fewer, with a separate booking path for nine or more, and social golf clubs can apply in writing for discounted rates. Members of a small list of reciprocal clubs pay half green fees. The dress code is relaxed but bans singlets and thongs, and covered shoes are compulsory. The club is licensed and no alcohol may be brought onto the premises.
The clubhouse opens daily, is cashless, and sells beer, a limited range of wine and simple food such as pies and sausage rolls, with a covered outdoor area for after the round. Golf professional Shane Cochrane coaches from Tuesday to Saturday on (02) 4234 3333.
