About the course
Hawks Nest Golf Club is at 1 Sanderling Avenue, Hawks Nest, on the Myall Coast about an hour north of Newcastle and two and a half hours from Sydney. Local golfers formed the club in 1963, but construction began only in the early 1970s, when land was leased from the Great Lakes Council and volunteers cleared and built the first nine holes. The course grew to 12 holes in 1986 and to 18 in 1989. The first clubhouse was built in 1977 and was most recently refurbished inside in 2021.
The course is an 18-hole par 72 laid out through native bushland with plenty of wildlife, and the club promotes it as an all-weather course that holds up well after rain. Craig Parry is guiding the club's course improvements, and he describes a tree-lined course that rewards good driving and iron play, with quick greens.
The course is open 364 days a year from 7am, or 6am during daylight saving, and social golfers and groups are welcome every day. Tee times can be booked online. The club has 40 Yamaha carts, which are in demand, so book one ahead through the pro shop on 02 4997 0740. Golfers staying in Nelson Bay can take the ferry across and the club will arrange pick-up. Major events include the Myall Coast Veterans Week of Golf in February, the Ladies Classic in March and a PGA pro-am in August or September.
The pro shop opens from 6.30am to 6.30pm daily, later in daylight saving, and Head Professional Kieran McMahon runs lessons, clinics and club fitting with a GCQuad launch monitor. Practice facilities include a driving range, a large putting green, a chipping green with bunkers, two covered nets and an indoor simulator. Sando's Café & Restaurant serves lunch from 11am to 3pm and dinner from 5pm seven days, with breakfast on weekends, and the clubhouse has a sports bar with TAB and Keno and a courtesy bus on Tuesday to Sunday evenings.
