About the course
Horizons Golf Resort is at Salamander Bay on the Port Stephens peninsula. The course was designed by Australians Ross Watson and Graham Marsh, who shaped it out of swampland, and it opened in 1992. A decade later, in 2002, it was rated among Australia's top 50 courses.
The 18-hole, par 72 layout winds through lakes, bushland and wetland, with undulating fairways and bentgrass greens. Many greens are large and tiered, and water or lateral hazards feature on most holes. Holes worth knowing (blue tees):
- 3rd: a 479-metre par 5 with a double dogleg, left then right, where the fairway tightens 100 metres from the green.
- 6th: a 160-metre par 3 over water to a raised two-tier green ringed by bunkers.
- 9th: a newly remodelled 307-metre par 4 with new fairway bunkers and a green twice its old size.
- 17th: a 153-metre par 3 included in the book 1001 Golf Holes You Should Play Before You Die.
- 18th: a 495-metre par 5 with water down the left and a four-tier green.
Visitors are welcome. Weekday social rates (Monday to Friday) are $67.50 for 18 holes and $42.50 for nine, or $92.50 and $60 with a shared cart. The club has a 280-metre open-air driving range behind the clubhouse ($10 for visitors), a chipping area with a practice bunker and a putting green near the 1st tee. Head professional Vince Owen and PGA professional Greg Hall give lessons. The cafe and bar serves breakfast and lunch from 8.30am to 3pm daily and bar snacks until 5.30pm, and will have a coffee ready at the turn if you text from the 9th.
