About the course

Newcastle Golf Club was founded in 1905 on the old Broadmeadow racecourse and incorporated a year later. In 1913 and 1914 it began building a nine-hole course in the sand dune country at Fern Bay, then known as North Stockton, and play started there in 1915, with members arriving by chartered ferry. Eric Apperly later designed the 18-hole course, keeping seven of the original holes, and Fred Popplewell Senior built it. The Army occupied the course during the Second World War. The club has hosted the NSW Open in 1972 and 2011 and the 1995 Australian Ladies Amateur.

The course runs through dune bushland that is home to wallabies and goannas. Notable holes include:

  • 5th: a 368-metre par 4 doglegging left, where a ridge feeds approaches into deep greenside bunkers; into the southerly onshore breeze the second can need a wood.
  • 6th: a 367-metre par 4 to an elevated green, where a short approach rolls back down the hill.
  • 7th: a par 3 with deep bunkers across the front and a slope off the back.
  • 10th: a 485-metre par 5 with blind tee and second shots.

A course upgrade runs from September 2025 to mid-2027; all 18 holes are expected to stay open, but layouts will change during the works.

Public tee times are limited. Visitors register online as public members to book, or contact the pro shop by email or on (02) 4928 1984. Visitor windows are Monday from 9am, Tuesday and Thursday from 11am, Wednesday and Saturday after 3pm, Friday all day and Sunday from noon. The visitor fee is $100 for 18 holes, with motorised carts $60, electric buggies $15 and pull buggies $10. Shirts must be collared and tucked in, and denim is not allowed.

The driving range, short-game area and two warm-up bays are open to visitors playing that day, and the club's academy gives lessons with launch monitor and putting analysis technology.
