About the course
Port Kembla Golf Club is at Golf Place, Primbee, about 15 minutes south of Wollongong in the Illawarra, and is an affiliate of Wests Illawarra. Its 18-hole, par 72 course is of championship length and has hosted professional tournaments as well as the NSW Champion of Champions.
The layout combines tree-lined fairways with water carries. In 2020 the club asked Australian professional Craig Parry to recommend changes that would ease the course for higher handicappers without weakening it for low markers. His 30 recommendations, mostly reshaping fairways and reshaping or removing bunkers, were carried out on 13 holes in one week that September by the maintenance team and volunteers. A second Parry report in 2021 reworked every bunker for easier access and machine raking. From the blue tees there are four par 5s of 482 to 514 metres.
- 3rd: a 176-metre par 3 whose approach was opened up by removing the bunkers short left and right.
- 8th: a 129-metre par 3 surrounded by sand, where a front-right bunker and the Lomandra in front of the tee were removed.
- 15th: the longest par 3 at 180 metres, with one greenside bunker removed and another reshaped to widen the landing area.
Visitors can book social rounds online. Weekday fees are $50 for 18 holes and $37 for nine, and $60 and $45 at weekends; juniors pay $25 and $15. Twilight golf starts from $30, and a weekday offer from 3pm gives two players and a shared cart for $90. Visitor cart hire is $50 for 18 holes and $34 for nine, and hire clubs are available.
The club has the largest grass-tee driving range in the Illawarra, with two large tees, a short game area and a practice putting green, open seven days. The resident professional gives lessons, and the golf shop opens from 6:15am to 6pm, and until 8pm on Fridays.
