About the course
Calderwood Valley Golf Course lies in a quiet rural valley at Calderwood, about 20 minutes south of Wollongong, with the Illawarra escarpment as its backdrop. It describes itself as the only exclusively public course in the Illawarra: there are no club competitions, and social players and groups can play all day, seven days a week.
The 18-hole layout was designed by McKay and Sons and plays to a par of 70, measuring 5091 metres from the blue tees and 4449 metres from the red. Creeks wind through the course and native wildlife is common.
- 1st: a 452-metre par 5 where a good drive opens up a chance to reach the green in two; a gully, a dam to the left and a fairway bunker frame the hole.
- 6th: the signature hole, a 148-metre par 3 tucked into the escarpment, with a creek running from the tee around the left of the green.
- 12th: rated the hardest hole, a 466-metre par 5 that doglegs left over a gully to a small, elevated green.
- 18th: a slightly uphill par 4 that doglegs right past four fairway bunkers.
Weekday green fees are $38 for 18 holes and $32 for nine, rising to $45 and $36 on weekends and public holidays. Twilight golf after 2 pm costs $34, and on Tuesdays 18 holes walking is $32. Players can tee off and pay afterwards for the holes they complete. Groups of 12 or more receive midweek discounts, and bookings for the fleet of 30 carts are recommended. Neat dress and golf or sports shoes are required.
The course is open from 6 am to 6 pm daily, closing only on Christmas Day. The pro shop sells food and drinks, and clubs and buggies can be hired. A covered gazebo and BBQ area can cater for groups of up to 120.
