About the course
Scone Golf Course is a nine-hole course at White Park on Aberdeen Street, within the town limits of Scone in the Upper Hunter, about two hours' drive north of Newcastle, with views across the surrounding hills. The club re-formed in 1946 after disbanding during the Second World War, and Geo Mayo, course supervisor at The Lakes Golf Links in Sydney, planned its nine-hole layout. Since 2015 the club has been a sub-club of the Scone RSL Group. The old course closed in 2017 to make way for the Scone Bypass, and a fully redeveloped course opened in May 2019.
The new layout uses separate tees for the back nine, giving par 72 from every set of tees, from 6044 metres off the blue tees to 5013 metres off the yellow. Mature gums were kept, thousands of trees planted, and creeks, Parsons Gully and dams come into play. Upper Hunter Shire Council maintains the course with volunteer help.
- 2nd: a 451 metre par 5 doglegging left, with a creek about 90 metres short of a raised green.
- 4th: a 164 metre par 3 over a diagonal creek close to the green.
- 7th: a 503 metre par 5 doglegging right, often into the westerly wind.
The course is open to the public every day, apart from members-only periods for the Saturday men's competition (8am to 3pm) and the Thursday ladies' competition (9am to 1pm). Social golfers pay by card at a ticket machine on the cart path to the 1st tee. Visitors with a Golf Australia handicap can play club competitions, with walk-up starts Sunday to Friday; bookings are taken at Scone Sporties on 02 6545 1814. Pull buggies and club sets can be hired there during opening hours.
There is no golf professional. Practice facilities include a putting green, a chipping green, a bunker and two hitting nets. Scone Sporties, the former golf clubhouse on site, has a bistro, lounge and outdoor deck, and opens Tuesday to Sunday.
