About the course
Coober Pedy Opal Fields Golf Club is off Rowe Drive, Coober Pedy, in South Australia's outback opal fields. The club was formed in 1976 on rocky scrub around the Coober Pedy Racing Club grounds and used the racing club's shed as its clubhouse for several years. Extensions opened in 1996 took the course to 18 holes; they were designed by Dennis Ingram, a professional golfer who spent three years as an opal miner before joining the world veterans' circuit.
There is no grass on the course. Its holes cross desert flats and gibber hills: the fairways are white local sandstone, spread over rough patches and rolled after rain, and the greens are black scrapes made from quarry dust mixed with waste oil. Tees are topped with artificial turf, and players place the ball on a small square of artificial grass on the fairway. A local 'rock relief' rule allows a free drop when the ball comes to rest on or against rocks. Wind and dust can change club selection from one day to the next, and golfers have found opal during a round. The course has appeared in documentaries and advertising, including a 2018 Bonds campaign.
Visitors are welcome. The club's regular competition is on Sundays from April to October, with registration at 12pm and tee off from 12.30pm for nine or 18 holes. To play at any other time, pay at Opalios on Hutchison Street (opposite the post office) and head out to the course whenever you like. Green fees are $35 per round and club hire is $10. The club also holds night golf sessions through the year and an annual open weekend in September, with a Saturday ambrose and a Sunday stroke event. The clubhouse and its facilities are used by the wider community.
