About the course
Port Augusta Golf Club was founded on 1 July 1926 with a nine-hole course about six kilometres east of the town, where only a line of gum trees now remains. The club went into recess during the Second World War and re-formed in May 1950, when the council offered parkland at Port Augusta West. Play began there in 1951 and the course reached 18 holes by 1958. Flooding on the low clay ground led to a rebuilt all-weather course and a new clubhouse, opened in May 1971 on a rise looking to the Flinders Ranges. Effluent water brought grassed fairways between 1980 and 1984, and all 18 greens were grassed by 1991.
The course measures 5757 metres to a par of 70, with four par 3s, twelve par 4s and two par 5s. Wide kikuyu fairways give way to red sand rough and saltbush, 24 bunkers guard most holes, and the santa ana couch greens go dormant in winter but run fast.
- 2nd: a straight 513-metre par 5, stroke index 2.
- 3rd: a 147-metre par 3 ringed by four pot bunkers.
- 17th: a 451-metre par 5 that turns 45 degrees right about 200 metres from the tee.
- 18th: a 356-metre par 4 that bends left and climbs to the green.
All golfers are welcome, and players with an official handicap can enter competitions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11.30am and on Saturdays via the start sheet. Non-member green fees are $30 for 18 holes and $20 for nine, with under-18s half price. Wednesday twilight golf runs in daylight saving, a nine-hole stableford with hit-off from 4.30 to 5.30pm, $10 for non-members.
Carts and limited hire clubs are available from the volunteer-run clubhouse, open daily from 8am to 4pm. The bar opens Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm and Friday from 5.30pm.
