About the course

Roxby Downs Golf Club is in the mining town of Roxby Downs, about 550 kilometres north of Adelaide. Its 18-hole desert course measures 5683 metres to a par of 72, with each nine a par 36: the front nine has two par 3s, five par 4s and two par 5s, and the back nine three of each.

The greens are couch grass, which makes this one of only a few courses north-west of Adelaide with grass putting surfaces, and every tee is grassed. There are no sand bunkers, but the desert rough punishes a wayward shot and the dunes can leave lies that play like bunker shots. A local rule allows preferred lies on the fairways, including use of a grass mat. The course has been reconfigured with a new watering system, and recent work has replanted the 18th fairway, added ladies' tees on the 1st and 7th and created a practice fairway and tee behind the clubhouse beside the 14th.

The course is open seven days a week in daylight hours. The clubhouse is not staffed, so green fees go in the box on the clubhouse behind the 1st tee: $20 cash for non-members, or slightly more paid electronically through Vendi Golf. Hire clubs cost $10 cash from the garden shed. Unauthorised vehicles are not allowed on the course.

Club competitions run from mid-March to the end of October and are open to men, women and juniors under the official handicap system, with provisional handicaps available most weeks. Thursday competitions run all year, organised by two groups working opposite Olympic Dam rosters. The clubhouse can also be hired for functions.
