About the course
Mount Osmond Golf Club sits in the Adelaide foothills about 15 minutes from the CBD, with views over the city, the Mount Lofty Ranges and the coast. It began when Burnside council engineer Sydney Melbourne, whose 1924 proposal for a public course was declined, gathered a syndicate that formed the Mount Osmond Country Club company in 1927, with E.W. (later Sir Edward) Holden as first president. A country club building with accommodation, tennis courts and a pool opened in 1930 and served as a convalescent hospital during the war. Sheep grazed the course into the 1950s, the club was incorporated in 1957, and Sir Donald Bradman won the club championship in 1935 and 1949.
The 18-hole course has wide, undulating fairways, with several holes playing uphill or across water.
- 3rd: a 393-metre par 4, formerly a par 5, rated the hardest hole and recently given a new green and bunkers.
- 7th: a 275-metre dogleg par 4 with out of bounds left and water right.
- 18th: a 472-metre par 5 finish with out of bounds along the right.
Visitors can play all day on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Members have the course until 1pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, until 3pm on Saturday and until 10.30am on Sunday, though guests playing with a member can use those times. Green fees are $90 for 18 holes and $50 for nine, or $60 and $35 with a member, with after-3pm rates of $30 in winter and $50 in summer and $100 on public holidays. Tee times are booked online after registering. Each player needs their own clubs, and hire sets are available from the golf shop. Collared shirts are required, and denim, t-shirts, singlets and board shorts are not allowed. Competitions run seven days a week.
The bar and bistro is open to the public daily from 10am to 5pm, closing at 3pm on Sundays. PGA-led beginner and intermediate clinics run during the year.
