About the course
Blackwood Golf Club is a private members' club at Cherry Gardens in the Adelaide Hills, about seven minutes' drive from the Blackwood roundabout and 15 minutes from the Tollgate. The club was formed at a public meeting in the Blackwood Parish Hall on 12 May 1930 and first played on Lachlan McTaggart's property south of Blackwood, leased for one shilling a year. That course closed in 1959, and after a season in the National Park at Belair the club bought 100 acres at Cherry Gardens in 1961, the site it still uses. In 1986 it became the first South Australian club to admit women as full members. Around the turn of the century the back nine was rebuilt with three new holes and the clubhouse was extended.
The 18-hole course is set in bushland, with fairways and greens framed by mature trees and watered from the club's own supply. Bunkers and water hazards can be taken on or played around. From the men's tees the hole-by-hole tour adds up to a par 72 of about 6,070 metres.
- 1st: a 372-metre par 4 with a tight drive between out of bounds on the right and pines on the left, then uphill to a raised green.
- 18th: a 486-metre par 5 that doglegs sharply right around a stand of large eucalypts, reachable in two after a long drive.
As a private club, Blackwood encourages members to bring guests, and green fee visitors are accepted on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday after 11am. Green fees are $75 for 18 holes on weekdays and $90 on Sunday, and carts are $65. Book by phone through the pro shop on (08) 8388 2250, which also hires clubs, buggies and carts.
Practice facilities include two putting greens, two driving ranges (one synthetic), practice nets, a 90-metre pitching area with bunkers and a practice hole. Head professional Troy Lane, five times SA PGA Teacher of the Year, leads coaching and the Get Into Golf programs. The two-storey clubhouse is open seven days for lunch, with Thursday dinners in summer.
