About the course
Oakbank Golf Club is on Smith Street in Oakbank, in the Onkaparinga Valley about 30 minutes' drive from Adelaide. Founded in 1892, it describes itself as South Australia's second oldest golf club and was a founding member of the South Australian Golf Association. For about its first 100 years the club played on the Oakbank Racecourse, home of the Great Eastern Steeplechase, where the race-track rails and sand track served as hazards in place of bunkers. In 1994 a new nine-hole course was laid out on farmland owned by J and A G Johnston since 1858, and after a year at Mount Pleasant the club opened its first season there on 15 January 1995. It bought the course from the Johnston company in June 2015.
The nine holes have alternate tee blocks for 18-hole rounds, and the 2021 scorecard shows a men's par of 68 over 5,250 metres. The couch fairways are irrigated, there are only two sand bunkers, and the course is easy to walk. Hundreds of trees and shrubs planted since the 1990s now line the fairways.
Visitors and groups are welcome outside member competitions: the course is closed to green fee players until 3.30pm on Saturdays, and on Tuesday (women) and Wednesday (mixed) mornings until 1.30pm visitors must give way to competition players. Visitors with a Golf Link number can enter club competitions. The green fee is $40 for either nine or 18 holes, with concession and junior rates, paid by card at a tap terminal, in the clubhouse when volunteers are present, or in cash at an honesty box. Powered carts are $45 for non-members and must be booked well ahead through the club secretary.
The club is run entirely by volunteer members, and its clubhouse and outdoor deck are open to green fee players.
