About the course
Whyalla Golf Club is four kilometres from the Whyalla City Plaza on the Port Augusta Road (Alternate Highway 1), opposite the Whyalla Visitor Centre and Maritime Museum. Golf reached Whyalla in 1933 with a private nine-hole course, the Clutha Golf Links. Local golfer Syd Chandler began the present course in 1939 on land granted by BHP, the club opened in 1940, and in 1961 the course was extended to 18 holes with a new clubhouse. For decades it was played on scrapes and largely bare fairways. In 2004 the club joined Whyalla City Council in a water recycling project, becoming the largest single user of the city's recycled water, and after 18 months of volunteer work the fully grassed course opened in November 2005.
The par 72 layout has four par 3s and four par 5s, and several greens have more than one level. Holes to note: - 7th: a 121-metre par 3 with a sea view and a deep bunker front right. - 16th: the longest hole, a 531-metre par 5 that doglegs right, with the fairway barely visible from the tee. - 17th: a 355-metre par 4 rated the hardest hole, often into a strong southerly.
Social golf is open to visitors every day; check times with the golf shop on (08) 8645 9109, especially on Saturdays. Men's competitions run on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, women's on Tuesday and Thursday, and nine-hole twilight golf runs on Friday evenings during daylight saving. Visiting members of other clubs can enter a competition by paying the day's fee. The 2026-27 handbook lists electric carts at $40 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, clubs at $15 and push buggies at $5. Dress is neat casual, with no singlets, beach shorts or tracksuit pants.
The clubhouse has the golf shop, a bar, a function room and a kitchen. There is a practice fairway marked every 25 metres and three practice nets, and the bowling club has two grassed rinks.
