About the course
Sandy Creek Golf Club is at 129 Williamstown Road, Sandy Creek, about five minutes' drive from Gawler and an hour from the Adelaide CBD. It was founded in 1904 as Gawler Golf Club and was a founding member of the South Australian Golf Association. Over the next half century it played at Para Para, at Quindoo Park (where Kooyonga professional Rufus Stewart laid out the links in 1925), on two sites at Sandy Creek and at Concordia. The club bought the present site in 1960 and opened it on 30 April 1961 as a nine-hole scrapes course designed by member Nolan Kokegei. It grew to 13 and then 18 holes, converted its scrapes to greens between 1972 and 1974, and changed its trading name to Sandy Creek Golf Club in September 2015.
The course is 18 holes, 6,030 metres and par 72, on gently undulating sand belt country with views over the Barossa Valley. Several holes have water hazards, and a 1995 redevelopment replaced the hole known as Cardiac Hill with the downhill 13th.
Visitors are welcome seven days, subject to availability, although social bookings on Saturdays start from 11am and Thursday times are limited. Green fees are $45 for 18 holes and $30 for nine on weekdays, and $60 and $40 on weekends and public holidays. Twilight from 3pm is $25 for as many holes as you like. Juniors 12 to 18 pay $20 for 18 holes, and under-12s play free with an adult. Groups of up to eight can book online; otherwise ring (08) 8524 4231. Electric carts are $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, for licensed drivers aged 18 and over, and clubs and trolleys can be hired.
There is a 320-metre driving range, with balls from $7 a bucket, and the clubhouse has a large deck overlooking the course.
