About the course

Bicheno Golf Club sits about 5 km north of Bicheno on Tasmania's east coast. The push for a course began in 1960, when Brian Winspear went looking for land; the present site came from the owners of Toxtech Park, first on lease and later as freehold. Alf Toogood, then the professional at Kingston, designed the layout, volunteers built it, and the club was constituted in 1967, with play starting around 1967 and 1968. The clubhouse was built by volunteers and has been extended since.

The course has nine holes and 18 tees, and its tees, fairways and greens are fully irrigated so it plays year round. Men play from the blue and white markers to par 71, at 5,757 metres from the blue, and women from the red markers to par 72. Trees line much of the layout, and two of the par 5s carry out of bounds down the left.

  • 4th: a 195-metre par 3 to a very small green.
  • 7th: a 425-metre par 5 that doglegs left and can be reached in two by long hitters.
  • 9th: a 440-metre par 5 with a slight dogleg left and a gentle rise to the green.

The course is open seven days. Visitors pay $30 a day or $100 a week for unlimited holes, and under 16s play free with an adult. When no one is in the clubhouse, green fees go in the honour system in the foyer, by tap-and-pay terminal or cash envelope. Free pull buggies are kept under the front deck, carts cost $30 when the club is open, and clubs can be hired from the Bicheno newsagency.

  • Wednesday and Friday: nine-hole Chicken Run, open to all.
  • Saturday: mixed competition, open to visitors with a Golf Australia handicap.

The clubhouse has a full bar, open Wednesday and Saturday from 2pm to 5pm and Friday from 2pm to 6.30pm.
