About the course
Longford Golf Club is a volunteer-run country club five minutes from the town of Longford and about 20 minutes from Launceston. It was founded on 7 April 1899 and was one of the five foundation clubs of the Northern Tasmanian Golf Association. The club moved several times in its early decades, playing inside the Longford racecourse, at Woolmers, at Mountford (a course laid out by L.A. Cuff that had a par 6 until 1939) and at Cressy House. In 1975 it bought 110 acres known as Sweaborg, engaged Major Al Howard of Sydney to design a new course, and opened it on 31 March 1979.
The club's history describes the present layout as an eleven-hole course played as 18, with several shared fairways. After a 2024 review of tee positions it plays as a par 72 for everyone, from three gender-neutral sets of tees: white/blue, red/yellow, and orange for beginners and children. From the back tees:
- 1st: a 403-metre par 4.
- 4th: a 169-metre par 3 with water in front of the tee and out of bounds left.
- 17th: a 429-metre downhill par 5 with a fast green.
- 18th: a 325-metre uphill par 4, with a drive over the lake from the back tees and an oak tree, the club's emblem, guarding the green.
The course is open for social play seven days a week. Social green fees are $25 for nine or 18 holes and $15 for juniors under 18, push carts hire for $5, and payment is by cash, direct debit or the Vendi EFT terminal. Visitors with a Golf Link handicap can join most competitions. Social players can usually tee off from about 1pm on competition days. The weekly program:
- Tuesday: Stan's Comp, a social competition.
- Wednesday: ladies' competition, plus an all-welcome Chicken Run from 2.30pm during daylight saving.
- Thursday: veterans.
- Saturday: club competition.
- Sunday: a nine-hole run from April to October, open to all.
Volunteers handle the mowing, maintenance, catering and hospitality. The club posts any course closures on its Facebook page.
