About the course
Orford Golf Club is on the Tasman Highway at Orford on Tasmania's east coast, looking out to Maria Island and the Mercury Passage. In 1957 locals met at the Orford Hall, raised the money to buy the Raspin property before it went to auction, and formed Orford Golf Links Pty Ltd to hold the land. Len Nettlefold drew up the nine-hole plan in December 1957, the first club meeting was held on 16 November that year, and the club was incorporated in 1973.
The nine holes are played as an 18-hole round of par 70, with alternate tees on some holes. Fairways are gently undulating and fairly narrow, with hazards throughout, and each hole carries a local name.
- 2nd, Spring: a par 3 with out of bounds on the road and power lines overhead; a ball that hits them is replayed without penalty.
- 5th, Break-Me-Neck: a par 4 regarded by the club as its hardest hole, with the drive carried over Shea's Creek and a steep bank.
- 6th, Bust-Me-Gall: a par 5 played almost entirely uphill, out of bounds right.
- 9th, Prosser: a tree-lined finish towards the clubhouse.
Green fees are $30 for nine or 18 holes, $10 for juniors, and $100 a week for adults. Carts cost $20 for nine holes and $35 for 18, clubs $10, and push buggies are free. Booking is only needed for large groups or hire, and the club is mostly unmanned, so give notice. Pay online, in the clubrooms or at the station near the practice green. Social play is off the yellow markers, and the course is closed to social players until 12.30pm on Thursdays and until about 2pm on Saturdays for competitions.
The clubhouse has a kitchen and bar seating up to 80, with drinks every Friday from 3pm to 6.30pm. There is a putting green, a practice net and an area for fairway shots.
