About the course
Warrnambool Golf Club is a public course on Younger Street, Warrnambool, on Victoria's Shipwreck Coast. It is the home club of PGA Tour player Marc Leishman, who is an honorary member. The club has completed a $7.5 million clubhouse redevelopment, designed and built by local firms and part-funded by the Federal Government's Building Better Regions Fund, and its cafe, bar and lounge are open to the public seven days.
The par 72 layout runs behind a tertiary dune system, with elevated tees, tea tree lining many fairways and several tight driving holes. Holes 4 to 6, three par 4s, are known as the Shipwreck Bend. Lengths below are from the blue tees: - 4th: a 311-metre par 4 with a large dune blocking the right and a short approach to a raised green. - 5th: a 327-metre par 4 with sea views, tight tree lines and a green sloping hard from back to front. - 10th: the longest hole at 520 metres, a double-kinked par 5 usually played into the wind to a tiered green. - 13th: a 117-metre par 3 to a green 20 metres above the tee.
Visitors are welcome seven days and bookings are essential, by phone with the pro shop. Green fees are $79 for 18 holes and $45 for nine, and juniors under 18 pay $20 and $15. During daylight saving there is a $28 rate after 5pm. Carts cost $50 for 18 holes and $32 for nine, a pull buggy $5, and clubs with buggy $25. Neat casual golf wear is fine, but not thongs, singlets or ripped denim, and BYO alcohol is not allowed.
The on-course golf shop, run by PGA professional Trent Wieland, opens 7am to 6pm daily and offers lessons, club fitting and MyGolf and Get Into Golf clinics. Practice areas include two putting greens by the clubhouse and a chip and putt area next to the 10th tee. The clubhouse has locker rooms with showers, and the bar and lounge serve cafe-style food, staying open late Thursday to Saturday.
