About the course

Woodlands Golf Club in Mordialloc was formed on 17 July 1913 as Mordialloc Golf Club, with Richard Banks laying out nine holes for its opening day that September. The course grew to 18 holes in 1919, and in 1925 members chose the name Woodlands. The club bought its ground, the Mayfield Estate, in 1933 and is the only one of the historic Sandbelt clubs still on its original site.

The layout reflects several hands. J.D.A. Scott advised on bunkering and new holes in the 1920s, Royal Melbourne greenkeeper Mick Morcom advised on the greens, and Alex Russell reshaped parts of the course from 1934, designing the 11th, 16th and 17th. For the centenary in 2013 Tom Doak added a 19th hole, a par 3. Peter Thomson won the 1948 Victorian Amateur here, and Robert Allenby set the course record of 66 winning the 1991 Victorian Open.

The course is par 72, with small, firm, fast greens, narrow couch fairways and deep Sandbelt bunkering, and favours strategy over length.

  • 4th: a driveable par 4 to a narrow tabletop green with no bunkers around it.
  • 5th: a par 3 to a narrow green guarded by deep bunkers.
  • 15th: a par 5 of about 550 yards that Doak rated among the world's best.

Woodlands is a private members' club. Visitors play through its Manager Introduced Guests programme, on application, at $400 for domestic and $500 for international guests, with tee times requested from the operations manager by email; reciprocal players book through the pro shop. Times are generally Monday and Wednesday afternoons and Tuesday and Friday. Collared shirts tucked in and soft spikes are required, and mobile phones are not permitted on the course or in the clubhouse.

Practice facilities include a target driving range, a short game area and two putting greens, with coaching seven days a week, open to non-members. The 1927 Edward Billson clubhouse, modernised in 2010, has a dining room overlooking the 1st.
