About the course
Southern Golf Club is a private members' club on Lower Dandenong Road in Keysborough, in Melbourne's south-eastern Sandbelt. The club dates from 1937 and occupies a 130-acre site of trees and bushland, bordered on most sides by Braeside National Park. Players to come through the club include Australian Open champion and PGA Tour winner Bob Shearer and PGA Tour player Cameron Percy, and it runs a junior academy and scholarship programs carrying both their names. OCM prepared a masterplan for the course in 2022.
The round opens with a 388-metre par 4 from the men's tees, where a wide fairway leads to a green that falls away at the front, back and sides. It closes with a 362-metre par 4 on which a miss to the left must be avoided; a drive over the corner leaves only a wedge.
Southern is not open to the public. Guests must be introduced by a member and register with them at the golf shop, and a guest may be invited only once a calendar month. Up to three guests per member can play on Monday, Thursday and Friday, on Tuesday after 12pm and on Wednesday after 3.45pm. At weekends and on public holidays one guest per member may tee off between 12.30pm and 1.15pm and must hold an active Golf Link number. Guest fees start from $95, with a $70 rate on Tuesday afternoons, and Bay Cards are accepted only on Monday and Tuesday after 12pm. Members and guests are expected to dress to a private club standard.
Introduced guests may use the driving range, two practice putting greens, a short game area and warm-up nets. The golf shop opens daily from 6am to 6pm, sells clubs, clothing and footwear, and runs a club fitting program, and coaching is offered. The clubhouse hosts functions for up to 320 guests.
