About the course
Ledge Point Golf Club sits in the middle of the small coastal town of Ledge Point, about 50 minutes' drive north of the end of the Mitchell Freeway by way of Indian Ocean Drive. The course was designed by John 'Jock' Borthwick, a Ledge Point resident who was president of the PGA of Australia from 1968 to 1979 and again in 1986. Planning began in 2000, building started in 2002 and the course was officially opened in 2004. Local volunteers known as 'Dads Army' built it with donated and borrowed machinery, and volunteers still run it.
The course plays 18 holes over a nine-hole layout laid across the sand dunes, with undulating, fully reticulated kikuyu fairways, Santa Ana couch greens and views over the Indian Ocean. The rough is thick and the wind matters: easterlies in the morning and the sea breeze in the afternoon. The greens are cored and sanded each October.
Everyone is welcome, and the course is open in daylight hours every day of the year and is usually quiet on weekdays. Green fees are $25 for 18 holes and $20 for nine. Juniors aged 12 to 16 pay $15 and $10, and children 11 and under play free if supervised. Pay at the clubhouse, known as the Donga, or use the envelopes and honour box. Clubs and a buggy hire for $20, and the nine electric carts cost $40, best booked 48 hours ahead. Nothing is hired out after 4pm and carts must be back by 5.30pm.
Visitors can enter the regular competitions, ideally with an official handicap:
- Wednesday: ladies' 18-hole competition, 8.30am tee off.
- Friday: nine-hole Scroungers stableford, 2pm tee off.
- Saturday: sponsored 18-hole competition, 12pm tee off, $25 for non-members (prizes other than novelties may be for members only).
Range balls cost $10 for a bucket of 50. Meals are served at the Ledge Point Country Club from Thursday to Saturday, and its bar opens daily.
