About the course
Byron Bay Golf Club is on Broken Head Road, about 5 km south of the town centre and opposite the Byron at Byron resort, on Bundjalung Country close to Australia's most easterly point. The club dates from October 1957, when a group of locals took on a 193-acre dairy farm on the road, and turned its farmhouse into the first clubhouse. After months of Sunday working bees, about 100 golfers played the opening day in April 1958. Four more holes opened in 1980, and holes 15 to 18 were opened on 6 March 1983 by NSW Golf Union president Lionel Barnett, completing the par 72 layout. The clubhouse moved to its present site in 1975.
The course covers about 120 acres of gently rolling ground. One nine runs east to west with views to the sea and the other runs north to south towards the lighthouse. From the black tees it measures about 6,300 metres, with white and red tees for shorter play.
- 1st: a 400-metre par 4 and the men's index 1, with a hazard down the left and water within reach of long drivers.
- 13th: the club's signature hole, a 538-metre par 5 from an elevated tee with ocean views, played to a large, contoured green almost surrounded by water.
- 18th: a 360-metre par 4 with water right of the fairway and an uphill approach to the green below the clubhouse.
Visitors are welcome for social rounds, and players with a GA handicap can enter competitions, which run every day; the main club days are Wednesday and Saturday. Social golf is $90 for 18 holes and $50 for nine, with motorised carts $50 and $35, club hire from $30 and pull buggies $5. Book online or through the pro shop on 02 6685 6977.
The pro shop opens seven days and has a PGA professional for lessons, demo clubs, repairs and hire of electric buggies and carts. The clubhouse above the 18th green has a deck, change rooms, a bar with TAB and Keno, and serves dinner from Wednesday to Saturday.
