About the course
Camden Golf Club plays across Studley Park at Narellan, south-west of Sydney, with views to the Blue Mountains and Studley Park House, built in 1888 for William Charles Payne, overlooking the course. In the 1930s the property's owner, Arthur Gregory, commissioned Eric Apperly, five-time NSW Amateur champion and winner of the 1920 Australian Amateur, to lay out nine holes, and a second nine was added later. After the Army used the site during the Second World War, local residents secured a lease in 1949 and Camden Golf Club Ltd settled at Studley Park in 1950, converting the old stables into a clubhouse. The course has been reworked under a master plan since 2003.
The 18-hole course is a par 71 of about 5,900 metres from the longer tees, with the forward tees playing to par 74 over about 5,380 metres. Harvested water keeps it in condition year-round, and dams and bunkers come into play on many holes:
- 4th: a 520-metre par 5 with a dam along the left and a pond beside the green.
- 9th: a new 202-metre par 3 played uphill, rated the hardest hole on the card.
- 16th: a 159-metre par 3 over a dam, usually into the prevailing wind.
- 18th: a 249-metre par 4 whose last 70 metres climb Heartbreak Hill.
Visitors can play social golf on most days. Tee times can be booked online up to 90 days ahead or by phone, and it is worth checking the day's competition schedule with the pro shop on (02) 4648 2387. Motorised carts, clubs and buggies are available for hire. Collared golf shirts, tailored shorts, trousers or skirts and soft spikes are expected, and thongs are not allowed on the course.
The club has a full-length driving range, practice bunker and chipping green, and the pro shop, run by PGA professional Stuart Meani since 2017, has an indoor Trackman studio for lessons and fitting. The Stables bistro serves lunch and dinner daily, and a courtesy bus runs Friday to Sunday from 5pm.
