About the course
Cypress Lakes Golf & Country Club is part of the Avani resort on the corner of McDonalds and Thompsons roads at Pokolbin, in the Hunter Valley wine district. The course was designed by Florida architect Steve Smyers and opened in 1992, and it was listed in the Golf Digest and Golf Australia Top 100 for 2022-23.
The par 72 layout measures 6,467 metres from the black tees, 6,019 metres from the blue and 5,520 metres from the white, with red and yellow tees at 5,216 and 4,494 metres. The fairways are boldly shaped with changes in elevation, there are about 60 bunkers, and tees and greens look across vineyards to the Brokenback Range. Holes worth knowing (black tees):
- 3rd: a 216-metre par 3, the longest short hole.
- 9th: a 439-metre par 4 and the stroke index 1.
- 16th: a 573-metre par 5, the longest hole and index 2.
The course is open to the public and resort guests seven days a week, with times reserved for members on Wednesday and Saturday. Since 1 June 2026, green fees including a shared cart with Visage GPS are $130 for 18 holes and $100 for nine from Monday to Thursday, and $160 and $120 from Friday to Sunday. An optional competition fee is $15. Tee times are booked online with a credit card as a guarantee, and cancellations within 24 hours are charged in full. Groups of 16 or more should contact the golf team. Callaway rental sets cost $60 for 18 holes and $30 for nine. Players need a collared shirt and tailored shorts or slacks, with no denim or tracksuits, and BYO alcohol is not allowed.
The golf shop opens from 6.30am to 5.30pm daily. The driving range is open to the public from 6.30am until an hour before dark, with buckets at $12 and $40 and no booking needed. PGA professional Scott Cubis gives lessons, and juniors can join an eight-week coaching program during school terms.
