About the course

Easts Leisure & Golf, which incorporates Maitland Golf Club, is on Tenambit Street in East Maitland, just off Raymond Terrace Road. The golf club was established on 12 June 1899, which the club says makes it the 14th oldest in Australia, and golf is still played on the original site. Many hole names recall local history: the 8th, Postinatus, is named after the 1913 Melbourne Cup winner, trained on a racetrack that circled the course until 1988, and the 16th honours Maitland-born boxer Les Darcy. Easts is linked with East Maitland Bowling Club, and one membership covers both.

The 18-hole course is par 71 over 5,783 metres for men and par 72 over 5,178 metres for women. It is gently undulating and tree-lined, and eight holes have water from One Mile Creek, Two Mile Creek or dams. Holes worth knowing:

  • 2nd: a 418-metre downhill dogleg left, now the hardest par 4, where Billy Dunk made an albatross when it was a par 5 on his way to the 1960 NSW PGA title.
  • 13th: The Quarry, a 121-metre par 3 played over an old gravel quarry to a raised green.
  • 18th: a 366-metre par 4 that crosses Two Mile Creek and climbs to a sloping green below the clubhouse.

Visitors are welcome, and the club says booking is essential: phone the pro shop on (02) 4933 4141 or email it. Midweek green fees are $40 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, rising to $42 and $32 on weekends and public holidays, and school students pay $12. Visitor carts cost $45 and $30, and visitors generally cannot bring their own carts. The visitor competition fee is $45 midweek and Sunday and $48 on Saturday.

The pro shop, Maitland On Course Golf Factory, opens every day except Christmas Day, from 7am on weekdays and 6.15am at weekends. PGA professionals Vikki Wrigley and Michael Holden give lessons, and there are ladies' and junior development programs. Ollieo Restaurant in the clubhouse opens seven days.
