About the course

Hunter Valley Golf Club is the course at Rydges Resort Hunter Valley, at 430 Wine Country Drive in Lovedale, opposite Cessnock Airport. It is about 40 minutes from Newcastle and two hours 20 minutes north of the Sydney CBD.

The 18-hole course is par 71 over 5,397 metres from the blue tees, and the women's tees play to par 72 over 5,007 metres. The fairways slope gently through wine country, and the club points to several shorter holes and wide fairways as making it suitable for beginners. Water features on many holes: the 4th needs a carry from tee to green, the 7th has water down the left on what the club calls its hardest tee shot, a hazard crosses the fairway on the 9th, and the short 15th has water to the left with vineyards beyond the green. The course record is 62, nine under par, set by Brendan Smith.

The course is open to the public, and competitions run every day with visitors welcome to enter. Midweek public green fees are $55 for 18 holes and $38 for nine, rising to $65 and $43 at weekends. Juniors (17 and under) pay $25 for 18 holes and $15 for nine midweek, and Rydges guests get a lower rate by booking through the pro shop. Tee times can be booked online or by phone on (02) 4991 0977. Carts cost $40 for 18 holes and $30 for nine and are arranged with the pro shop rather than online, so book one with your round. Pull buggies are $5, standard club hire is $25 and premium TaylorMade sets are $60. Dress is a collared shirt, tailored shorts or slacks (with socks if in shorts), and soft-spike or flat-soled shoes.

The pro shop sells equipment and apparel, hires TaylorMade demo sets and handles club repairs, regripping and reshafting. A same-day golfer's lunch deal pairs any meal with a schooner or house wine for $28, and the resort's Lovedale Brewbar is on hand after the round.
