About the course
Kurri Golf Club was founded in 1930 and joined the Hunter River District Golf Association in 1931. It has played at its present site at Heddon Greta, on the edge of Kurri Kurri, since 1954. Members built the course in stages: the original nine holes, now the back nine, grew to 13, then 15 and finally 18. A mural on the clubhouse celebrates Hunter golfer Jack Newton, and in November 2024 the club amalgamated with Kurri Kurri Bowling Club on terms that keep the course running as a standalone 18-hole facility.
The par 71 course runs over undulating, tree-lined ground with bentgrass greens, and rewards accuracy and position from the tee more than length. Holes worth knowing (men's tees):
- 6th: a 145-metre par 3 across the lake to a small, sloping green.
- 9th: a 505-metre par 5 to an elevated green with a false front.
- 12th: The Valley, a 497-metre par 5 with bushland lining a narrow fairway.
- 17th: a 166-metre par 3 to a narrow green where the wind often plays a part.
Visitors are welcome. The social green fee is $35 for 18 holes and $25 for nine, except on Thursdays when it drops to $25 and $20 and includes a $2 bar voucher. Twilight rates are $30 after 2pm and $25 after 3pm, and junior visitors pay $12 and $6. Non-member carts are $45 for 18 holes and $30 for nine. Men's and women's competitions run on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with Ladies Day and the senior men on Wednesday; the visitor competition fee is $34, or $39 on Saturday. Tee times can be booked online.
The pro shop is run by PGA professionals Leigh Newman, at Kurri for more than 20 years and a master club fitter, and Brayden Peterson, with associate professional Harry Cleare also coaching. It opens from 6am most days and 6.30am on Monday and Thursday. The clubhouse opens daily from 10am (8am at weekends), and meals come from the Woks Bistro.
