About the course

Leonay Golf Club is at 1 Leonay Parade, Leonay, near Emu Plains on the western edge of Sydney, at the foot of the Blue Mountains. The land was once part of Edinglassie, the country retreat of Sir Francis Forbes, the colony's first Chief Justice. In 1914 Leo Buring bought a large part of it and named his home Leonay, joining his and his wife Ida's nicknames. He began laying out the Leonay Country Club in 1937, with a 19-hole course, before the Second World War interrupted play. Traces of old grape terraces can still be seen on the fairways, and Jamieson Creek runs past the front of the clubhouse.

The course is 18 holes, par 66, measuring 4,832 metres from the men's tees on the club scorecard, with a par 32 front nine and a par 34 back nine. It is tree-lined, with views to the mountains. The longest holes are the 11th, a 457-metre par 5, and the 16th, a 454-metre par 5, while the 3rd, a 373-metre par 4, is stroke index 1. Social players must play from the yellow tees.

The course is open to the public seven days a week, and tee times are booked by phoning the pro shop. Weekday green fees are $25 for 18 holes and $20 for nine, rising to $40 and $30 on weekends and public holidays. Seniors pay $20 on weekdays, and twilight golf is $15. GPS-equipped carts cost $45 for 18 holes for non-members, and pull buggies $10. Visitors can enter competitions on Monday (veterans), Wednesday (women), Thursday (open) and Saturday.

The pro shop stocks clubs and apparel, and the clubhouse has a bistro, a children's playground and function rooms.
