About the course

Taralga Golf Club, also known as Taralga Sands, is a nine-hole sand greens course in the village of Taralga, near Goulburn. It was set up in 1985 by locals who secured Crown land for the course and built sand greens because grass greens were too costly. Early maintenance relied on second-hand gang mowers towed behind utes.

The course closed after insurance premiums rose sharply following September 2001. When the Lands Department signalled in February 2006 that it would take back the land, a public meeting voted to revive the course, and it reopened in June 2006. Since then volunteers, helped by grants from Veolia and the local wind farm, have added a clubhouse, barbecue area, machinery shed, raised tees, signage and a new entrance and driveway.

The nine holes play to par 35 over 2,527 metres from the men's tees and 2,152 metres from the ladies' tees, or par 70 when played twice. The 4th, at 435 metres, is the only par 5, and the 3rd and 7th are the par 3s, the 7th measuring 130 metres. There are no bunkers. Each hole has a metal cross on the flagstick for raking a smooth line to the hole and a spoon for clearing the cup, and the local rule allows raking until the player is satisfied.

Visitors pay $10 in the honesty box and can play as many holes as daylight allows, with no booking needed. Scorecards are kept in a box beside the small clubhouse. Annual membership is $65, and a country membership for players living more than 100 kilometres away costs $140 and includes an official handicap.
