About the course
Berri Golf Club was formed in 1924 and is one of the older clubs in South Australia. Its first course, 12 holes on cleared river flats below the Berri Club, grew to 18 holes in 1933, but the club went into recess in 1942 during the Second World War and native scrub reclaimed the old layout. After the war a new course was built on rolling sandhills close to the centre of Berri, about 2.5 hours from Adelaide. Its fairways were first watered in 1964 and planting was finished by 1966.
The 18-hole course measures 6,019 metres at par 71 for men and 5,284 metres at par 73 for women. Irrigated fairways run through mallee and natural sandhill rough, which is hard to recover from, and kangaroos and emus are often seen on the course.
- 13th: a 207-metre par 3 played uphill to a large, rolling green with a deep bunker at the front right.
- 15th: the longest hole, a 500-metre par 5 that turns sharply about 200 metres from the tee towards a green surrounded by out of bounds.
The course is open to the public seven days a week, but closed until noon on Saturdays for pennant matches. Green fees are $30 for nine holes and $40 for 18, booked and paid at the Big River Tavern, which also hires carts ($40, from a fleet of 15) and clubs ($10). Neat dress is expected, and bare feet and thongs are not allowed. A twilight competition runs on Friday evenings during daylight saving.
Facilities include a free driving range with artificial turf mats near the 17th fairway, two warm-up nets beside the 1st tee and a putting green next to the 10th tee. The Big River Tavern overlooks the 18th green and serves light snacks from 8am, lunch from 12pm to 2pm and dinner from 5.30pm to 8pm daily. On-course accommodation is a short walk from the 1st tee.
