About the course
Mount Gambier Golf Club was established in 1909 and plays on Attamurra Road on the northern edge of the city, about five minutes from the centre, on land that was once rolling sand hills. Elevated tees on many holes give views across the course, and the native and exotic plantings bring plenty of birdlife and kangaroos.
The 18-hole course is par 72 and just over 6,000 metres from the men's blue tees, with a slope rating of 129. Women play a par 73 course of 5,200 metres, and an 18-hole orange course of 3,000 metres (par 62) caters for newer players. Fairways are Santa Ana couch and the greens are large, many of them long, narrow or tiered. A course enhancement program prepared by Crafter and Mogford Golf Strategies has widened fairways and removed trees to improve turf and playability.
- 8th: a 150-metre par 3 from an elevated tee, with a view south to the Mount Gambier Centenary Tower.
- 10th: a 160-metre par 3 that is all carry to an elevated green with a steep front slope.
- 17th: a 393-metre par 4, the hardest on the card, with a long uphill second shot.
- 18th: a 283-metre par 4 that doglegs right and climbs to the clubhouse.
The course is open to the public, and rounds are arranged through the pro shop. Green fees are $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, or $40 and $20 with a member, and juniors pay $12. Motorised carts cost $45 for 18 holes and $29 for nine, and clubs and pull carts can be hired.
The pro shop, run by PGA professional John Martin, is open from 8am to 6pm seven days a week and offers lessons, clinics, custom club fitting and repairs. There is a practice range, and the clubhouse has a wood fire for winter.
