About the course
South Lakes Golf Club is on Billabong Road at Goolwa South, close to the Goolwa Channel, the Lower Lakes and the Murray Mouth on South Australia's south coast. Opened in 1966, it was the first golf club in the state built as part of a holiday and residential community, and it now has the largest membership of any regional club in South Australia.
The 18-hole course has gently undulating fairways framed by coastal scrub, tall woodland and a series of lakes edged with reeds and paperbarks. From the men's tees it plays to par 70 over about 5,600 metres, with four par 3s, twelve par 4s and two par 5s. It is also a noted birdwatching spot: 88 species have been recorded on the course, the Australian pelican is the club's emblem, and each hole on the club's online tour is paired with a local bird.
- 1st: a 371-metre par 4 with a samphire-edged lake on the left of the fairway.
- 4th: a 456-metre par 5 from an elevated tee, with a line of Norfolk Island and cypress pines down the left.
- 13th: the longest hole, a 493-metre par 5.
Visitors are welcome at most times. On Wednesdays and Saturdays before 3pm the tee is reserved for members' competitions, and visitors can play then only by entering the competition with a current GolfLink ID, subject to approval. Green fees are $65 for 18 holes and $45 for nine, juniors under 16 pay $45 and $35, and twilight golf after 4pm is $39 for unlimited holes. Carts cost $50 for 18 holes and $40 for nine. The pro shop opens daily from 7am to 7pm and offers custom fitting, club repairs and coaching from Director of Golf Steve Capon and PGA associates. The clubhouse bar, bistro and gaming room open for lunch seven days, with dinner on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.
