About the course
Victor Harbor Golf Club was founded on 8 September 1911 by Dr Frank Douglas and eight local businessmen, and held its first open day on 28 September 1912. The club's best-known contribution to the game is the Ambrose format: Richard (Dick) Ambrose, an American with a holiday house near the Bluff, introduced a team 'shotgun' game here in the early 1960s, and members soon named it after him.
The 18-hole course is par 72 and measures 5,962 metres from the men's blue markers and 5,351 metres from the women's red markers. Year-round irrigation keeps the greens in condition, and kangaroos often graze on the fairways.
- 1st: a 402-metre par 4 from an elevated tee beside the clubhouse, looking over the town, the Bluff and Encounter Bay.
- 9th: a 374-metre par 4 with out of bounds right and trees left, rated the hardest hole on the course.
- 18th: a 306-metre par 4 with a blind tee shot; an electric rope pull helps players up the slope to the clubhouse.
Social players are welcome outside competition times, and guests with affiliated handicaps can enter all competitions. Social play is open all day Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, after 10.30am on Wednesday and after 1pm on Thursday and Saturday. Green fees are $55 for 18 holes and $40 for nine on weekdays, and $70 and $50 on weekends, public holidays and from 15 December to 31 January. Mad Monday is $45, and 18 holes after 3pm is $40. Carts cost $50 for 18 holes and $35 for nine. Book online or through the pro shop on 08 8552 2030. Shirts must have a collar, and only tailored shorts are allowed.
An undercover driving range opened in April 2024. The pro shop, run by PGA professional Ian Pritchard, offers lessons, club fitting and repairs. The 4ORE restaurant at the club serves lunch Wednesday to Sunday and dinner on Friday nights.
