About the course

Strathalbyn Golf Club plays on Cox Road in the hills outside Strathalbyn, among old gum trees, and is one of the oldest country clubs in South Australia. A nine-hole course was laid out at 'The Lodge' in about 1897, the club was one of nine foundation members of the South Australian Golf Association in 1904, and women were playing by 1905, forming their own club in 1907. Notable players include Guy Stirling, the 1908 South Australian Amateur Champion, and Max Semple, the club's leading player from 1934 to 1969.

Golf in the town went into recess during World War II, and a new club started on a nine-hole scrapes course in 1946. In 1962 the club moved to freehold land several kilometres out of town towards Ashbourne and built an 18-hole scrapes course, but without mains water it could never become a greens course. In 2002 the club converted to a nine-hole course with grass greens, watered from a dam and, since 2005, a bore; the fairways are not irrigated.

The nine holes are played twice from different tees for a par 72 round of 5,756 metres from the men's blue tees and 5,021 metres from the women's red tees. Each nine has two par 5s of about 445 metres. Players are asked to carry a sand bucket and repair divots.

Visitors are welcome and the club invites them to join its regular competitions; a GolfLink number is required on the card. Green fees are $20 for nine holes and $30 for 18.

  • Wednesday: women's competition at 8am, and men's 12-hole competition at 1pm (moved to 9am when the forecast is 35 degrees or more).
