About the course

King Island Golf and Bowling Club is on Owen Smith Drive in Currie, the island's main town. The club describes itself as the home of links golf on King Island since 1932, and for many years it was the island's only course, before Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes (now King Links) were built. The golf course sits beside the club's bowls green.

The nine holes are played as a composite 18: after the first nine, players pass the clubhouse and go round again using alternate tees or greens. The full round has three par 3s, 12 par 4s and three par 5s, a par of 72 over 5,476 metres. Some holes play through established vegetation and rolling farmland before the course reaches the coast, where it is fully exposed to the wind and changeable weather.

Visitors are welcome. Rounds can be booked and paid online for nine holes or all day, or paid at the clubhouse during opening hours. Clubs and golf carts can be hired by arrangement, pull buggies can be borrowed free, and dress is neat casual. There are no cart paths, so carts must stay at least 20 metres from greens. The Saturday competition is open to visitors: the clubhouse opens at 9am, play starts at 10am and the entry fee is $20, and players with a Golf ID can have their scores submitted for handicapping.

The King Island Open, first played in 1971, is held over the first weekend in November, with its main 36-hole stroke event on this course. The club also runs barefoot bowls on Thursday afternoons, which visitors can join, and has two squash courts with equipment for hire.
