About the course

Stanley Golf Club was established in 1909 in the coastal town of Stanley on Tasmania's north-west coast, below The Nut, the large volcanic plug that overlooks the town. Birdlife on the course includes several cockatoo species and wedge-tailed eagles, and wallabies, possums and the occasional Tasmanian devil are seen.

The nine-hole course plays as a par 66 over 18 holes and is run in the style of a British links. Trees and marram grass line the fairways, and there is a bunker and a sand dam. The opening hole is the only par 5, at 428 metres, with farmland out of bounds down the right. The other eight holes are four par 4s and four par 3s, ranging from the 104-metre 2nd to the 186-metre 7th. Sea winds can make scoring difficult.

Visitors are welcome. The green fee is $25 a day or $60 for a week, club hire is free, and the dress code is relaxed. When nobody is in the clubhouse, pay at the honesty box.

  • Tuesday: veterans from 11am.
  • Thursday: stableford, with tee times through the morning until midday.
  • Saturday: general competition (11:30am in winter).

Major events include the Nut Cup on the November long weekend.

The clubhouse bar opens most afternoons from about 3pm (2pm on Saturdays), and stays open until 9pm on Fridays, when the club holds meat and seafood draws. The clubhouse also hosts functions, including weddings.
