About the course

Bacchus Marsh West Golf Club, known to its members as "The West", is a public course at Maddingley, less than an hour west of Melbourne. The course is kept by a team of volunteers and greenkeepers, and the club credits a decade of work and better watering with transforming the old layout.

The 18 holes play to par 72, 36 out and 36 home, and the club's hole guide adds up to 5789 metres. Fairways range from wide to narrow, with bunkers and water hazards in play. Blue, white and red tees are numbered on the course map, and gold tees for beginners and juniors are marked by gold-topped posts at the edge of the fairway.

1st: a 462-metre par 5 to start.
8th: a 500-metre par 5, the hardest hole on the card.
12th: a 209-metre par 3.
18th: a 216-metre par 3 to finish.

Public tee times are booked by phone on (03) 5367 3492. When the shop is closed, players pay at the honesty box or online through QR codes on site. Social green fee players cannot go out on Saturdays from the first tee until 12.30pm, when the course is kept for competition players. Saturday is the main competition day, graded A to D; Wednesday has an 8am shotgun start for members and guests; Tuesday is the women's competition; and on Sundays anyone with a GA handicap can join a nine-hole competition. Carts and pull buggies are available for hire.

PGA-trained coach Zach Baker runs private lessons using SkyTrak to map each club in the bag, MyGolf junior clinics on Sunday mornings in school terms, and small group clinics for women and men.

Weekend $35 for 18 holes and $20 for nine; juniors $10 for 18 and $5 for nine; public bookings by phone; honesty box or online payment for out-of-hours play; social players off the 1st tee on Saturdays only after 12.30pm
