About the course

Bacchus Marsh Golf Club was formed at a meeting in the town's Mechanics' Institute on 23 April 1907. For decades members moved between sites, including the Racecourse Reserve, where a dry climate and no land of their own meant sand scrape greens and winter-only golf. In 1972 the club raised $40,000 to buy about 50 hectares of river-front land on Links Road at Darley, with irrigation rights, and volunteers planted hundreds of trees on a site that had just six. The course opened on 24 March 1974, when 246 players contested the first event, and the clubhouse followed in 1975. Darley is about 45 minutes from the Melbourne CBD via the Western Highway.

The 18-hole, par 72 parkland course follows the Lerderderg River, with views across the Lerderderg Valley to the Wombat State Forest. It measures 6042 metres from the black tees, 5842 metres from the blue and 5071 metres from the white. The ground is gently undulating, couch fairways allow play all year, and bunkers have recently been added on several holes.

  • 1st: a 360-metre downhill par 4 where drives kick left, to a smallish green with a deep bunker on each side.
  • 9th: a 486-metre par 5 with a hazard across the fairway short of a tricky green; the women rate it the hardest hole.
  • 17th: a 479-metre par 5, often played downwind, to a large green bunkered on both sides.

Green fee, social and corporate players are welcome, and tee times can be booked online. Visitors pay $39 for 18 holes and $29 for nine midweek, or $49 and $39 on weekends and public holidays. Unlimited golf after 3pm is $19 midweek and $29 on weekends, and juniors under 18 pay $5. Carts cost $50 for 18 holes and $32 for nine.

The pro shop opens daily from 7am or 7.30am. The clubhouse bar and bistro look over the course, with a gastropub-style menu built on local produce and a function space.
