About the course

Beaconhills Golf Club is at Upper Beaconsfield on the edge of the Dandenong Ranges, beside Cardinia Reservoir and about 50 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. Melbourne caterer Charles Ford opened the first nine holes, The Lakes Golf Links, with a golf house on 1 November 1930, on a layout by Dick Banks, one of Australia's early PGA professionals. That bark and timber clubhouse, built from materials cleared on the site, is still in use with its original granite fireplace. The course reached 18 holes during the Second World War, and the members' club was formed in 1947. A second 18 was under construction when the Ash Wednesday fires swept Upper Beaconsfield in February 1983; the course survived, 36 holes were in play by 1984, and the club cut back to 27 holes in 2007.

The 27 holes are made up of the Old Course and a Lakes nine, giving three 18-hole combinations. The Old Course has strong undulations through bushland and sloping greens. The Stoney Creek course pairs the Old front nine with the Lakes, playing around dams with Stoney Creek running through it. The Cardinia course pairs the Old back nine with the Lakes, running along Red Hill Road and the reservoir. Plentiful irrigation water keeps the wide fairways green through summer, and kangaroos live on the course.

The course is open to the public seven days a week, with online bookings up to 14 days ahead for groups of up to eight. Weekday fees are $52 for 18 holes and $35 for nine, and $65 and $45 on weekends. Carts cost $50 for 18 holes and $30 for nine. Casual wear is accepted, but not singlets or tracksuit pants. A nine-hole twilight competition starts at 3pm on Wednesdays during daylight saving, open to visitors.

The clubhouse has a bar and bistro and a deck beside the practice putting green, and PGA professionals offer lessons and clinics.
